Purpose, objective, or mission: Bayline is the “official bulletin of the San Francisco Bay Region Chapter” of the Special Libraries Association (or the SLA), according to their website. It presents information of interest to librarians in special libraries throughout the Bay Area.1

Target audience: The target audience is comprised of members of Special Libraries Association, an association for libraries who are not in traditional settings. These libraries can be at museums, corporations, law firms, botanical gardens, etc. “SLA serves more than 12,000 members in 83 countries in the information profession, including corporate, academic and government information specialists.”2

Publisher: The San Francisco Bay Region Chapter of the SLA.3

Medium: Online. In 2013, Bayline shifted from a web magazine to a blog that’s incorporated into SF chapter’s website.6

Content: Profiles of member libraries (which can be very interesting and varied), and articles presenting information librarians in nontraditional settings would find useful. It also contains business news for the professional organization, such as the treasurer’s report and information on what members are doing.7

Frequency of publication: Monthly issues, with new posts added as often as necessary. From a recent post, Bayline is updated with at least 2-3 posts per month.8

Location of submission guidelines: There are no submission guidelines at the Bayline website however each newsletter contains this statement, “All article submissions must receive approval from the editor and are subject to editing. Submitting authors must sign a copyright release. Authors retain all rights to their articles and know that the full contents of Bayline will be published online at the San Francisco Bay Region Chapter web site. Articles previously published will usually not be accepted for Bayline but exceptions can be negotiated.”9

Types of contributions accepted: There are no limitations given, however the articles should be of interest to the target audience. The invitation to submit does note that Bayline prefers not to publish articles that have seen prior publication, but this is negotiable.10

Submission and review process: Articles must be submitted to the editor before the publication date of the issue they were written for. The editor will read and make sure the article is appropriate for the audience, and is an appropriate length.

This publication would be a good venue for anyone writing an informal article on subjects of interest to almost any LIS subject, since special librarianship covers such a wide range of topics. There is no indication authors must be members of SLA to submit work for publication.

About the publication’s readers

Publication circulation: Bayline is a free online newsletter/magazine. It is emailed to members of the Bay Area Special Library Association, but is not printed and distributed. As an online periodical, it’s available throughout the world, but is actively read mostly in the Bay Area.13

Audience location and language or cultural considerations: Bayline is focused on the Bay Area, and deals with subjects of interest to librarians in the Bay Area. It is possible that articles with a national focus would be accepted for publication, but the readership is almost entirely local. This periodical is written in American English. Articles may deal with librarianship in other languages or cultures as special libraries may have collections in other languages, but the articles are written in English. There is a wide variety of cultures represented in the SLA, so authors should be sensitive to other cultures and avoid stereotypes and explain information that might not be evident to someone from a different cultural background.14

Reader characteristics: The range of librarians covered by the SLA is huge. The SLA local chapter website illustrates this by saying, “Members of the San Francisco Bay Region Chapter of SLA work in diverse information environments ranging from business and technical organizations to research, government and academic institutions. We are found in public and private corporations, law firms, colleges and universities, banks and financial institutions, newspapers, hospitals, research facilities, public libraries, and engineering and architectural firms. Although many members work in corporate and special libraries, others are managers, researchers, analysts, technical services specialists, and consultants.”15

Knowledge of LIS subject matter: Readers are almost entirely professional librarians or library students. A broad background in LIS subject matter can be assumed, but due to the diverse nature of the libraries represented, extremely specialized terms used in specific kinds of libraries or specializations (such as cataloging, technical services, reference) would need to be defined.16

Conclusion: Analysis of reader characteristics and their potential impact on authors

The readers of Bayline would be interested in any library topic, especially if it’s local, especially if it involves an unusual library or an unusual librarian. Profiles of libraries, tours of libraries, information on collections, profiles of members and information on resources are all of interest. Information on marketing to the general public would be slightly less well-received here than in other publication (because of the largely corporate nature of the libraries represented) but marketing within the organization would be of great interest.

Bayline is more of a community newsletter than other professional publications, with a section on member news and neighborhood professional dinners. The long community history of the newsletter may explain this, the archive shows that newsletter publication dates back to the 1920s.17

Location of submission guidelines: The editor of Marketing Library Services, Kathy Dempsey, does not accept blind submissions; instead, it is preferable to email her first (see Editor below) with an article idea, so that she can see if it fits in with upcoming issues, or whether or not something similar has already been published. In a personal correspondence she asserts that if the topic is something useful to Marketing Library Services readership, she will send the author a desired length and deadline. Writers will be sent guidelines, and all graphics (photos, charts, etc.) must be in color and high resolution.10

The site itself says very little about submissions. Editorial communications should be directed to the editor, Kathy Dempsey, at Information Today, Inc., 143 Old Marlton Pike, Medford, NJ, 08055-8750, or kdempsey@infotoday.com.11

Types of contributions accepted: From a correspondence with the editor: “Marketing Library Services covers a wide range of marketing-related topics, including these: advocacy, outreach, programming, fundraising, event planning, dealing with the media, getting votes for library issues, proving your value, making good promotional materials, community promotion, online promotion, winning related awards, studying demographics for target marketing, innovations, surveys and focus groups, strategic communication, etc. And, of course, true marketing (plans for full campaigns).” Also, “in addition to the case studies, Marketing Library Services carries news, reviews of books and videos, conference coverage, ideas for programs and events, and a fun look at libs in pop culture.” 12

Submission and review process: Authors first should send correspondence to Kathy Dempsey stating their idea. Because Marketing Library Services is published often, timely articles are strongly recommended. Also, authors must have been directly involved in the projects they are writing about, and should write in the first person. Ms. Dempsey states that authors’ specific titles do not matter.13

Editorial tone: Marketing Library Services should not be written in third-person or academic tones. The newsletter’s tone is conversational, professional, and should inspire readers. According to the editor, “Articles should be written as if you’€™re sitting down with a colleague and explaining your project over lunch.”14

The editor will correspond with the author about this after the author’s idea has been accepted.15

Marketing Library Services is a very good resource for LIS authors interested in writing on community outreach and marketing of library services. Many topics can fall under this umbrella, so it is important for potential authors to be creative and open in how they frame their content.

About the publication’s readers

Publication circulation: Marketing Library Services has 1,000 subscribers. Most of these are in the United States, but some are in Europe and a few are from other countries.16

Audience location and language or cultural considerations: Because the content of the newsletter is in English17 and about a broad topic (marketing), the geographic location of the newsletter’s readership is assumed to reside across the United States. There may be some librarians and information professionals outside the United States (such as the UK), but because marketing can be culturally specific, I suspect these readers are few. English is used entirely throughout Marketing Library Services18and, for the most part, readers are American and from Europe. Because of this spread, colloquialisms should be avoided (as in most professional writing).

Reader characteristics: According to Kathy Dempsey, the editor, most of the readership is comprised of librarians who market for their organization, while others are managers and directors. She also states that some are professors specializing in marketing. Because Marketing Library Services readership is comprised of professionals directly involved in marketing, it may be safely assumed that jargon specific to marketing is fine. As well, because this is a trade journal, readers will be interested in practical information. Kathy Dempsey states from a personal correspondence that, “MLS is written for a wide horizontal market that covers all types of libraries: public, academic, special (medical, gov’€™t, etc.), corporate, and to a lesser extent, K-12 school. It welcomes article queries from all of these librarians. What they all have in common is the need to promote their services. Many case studies about how one lib accomplished a goal can be used as models to doing similar things in other types of libraries. Articles on projects that have this ability to be widely replicated are especially valuable.”19

Readers of Marketing Library Services work in many types of libraries, so it may be safely assumed that they all value libraries’ continuing prosperity. That said, this does not mean that their values are identical. However, the newsletter’s tone is conversational, not argumentative. Articles written arguing strongly for one thing or another probably will not fit in Marketing Library Services.20

Knowledge of LIS subject matter: Readers of this newsletter have a high degree of LIS subject matter. Marketing Library Services caters to the LIS profession, so references to library specific trends, ideas, and concepts will be well received and will not require a high degree of explanation. However, because the readership is broadly based across the LIS professional spectrum some terms and knowledge specific to one group may not be appropriate for all readers.21

Conclusion: Analysis of reader characteristics and their potential impact on authors

Marketing Library Services is a newsletter informing LIS professionals the best practices and valuable ideas regarding LIS marketing. Professionals reading this newsletter are looking for good ideas and solidly practical plans and instances of good marketing. Marketing Library Services is not a dry tome of theoretical research written in an hermetic tone. Nonetheless, most of the readers are deeply engaged with marketing their organization, and are working professionals whose time and attention is valuable. Writers should consider their readers as interested colleagues who are deeply interested in successful programs and campaigns, and how they may learn from the writer’s experience and implement similar strategies in their own organizations.

It would be safe to assume that readers are interested in the accomplishments of their colleagues, and in advancing themselves through education.19 Readers work in a variety of medical organizations, but share an interest in their association’s mission to promote excellence in health sciences librarianship.20 They will likely have a specific interest in their field, their medical specialty, with less interest in general LIS topics.21

Knowledge of LIS subject matter: Most readers will have a familiarity with LIS subject matter but may not have a MLIS degree.22

Conclusion: Analysis of reader characteristics and their potential impact on authors

Authors considering submitting work to this publication will be best served by reviewing the past issues of the publication and remembering that readers are expecting to learn how to better perform and understand their work. While not a peer-review journal, readers are expecting short scholarly articles.

Types of contributions accepted: From the submission call: “HIP seeks to publish original research (both quantitative and qualitative), reviews and educational materials that directly address the practical challenges and opportunities of interprofessional care and education. Work published in Health and Interprofessional Practice should have immediate practical application for clinicians and educators who value interprofessional teamwork, evidence-based practice and culturally competent care. Articles that indicate methods of navigating interdisciplinary conflicts/disagreements (e.g. scope of practice issues) in the service of high quality patient care are of particular interest.”10 HIP publishes original theory & research, case-based learning, educational strategies, cross-cultural issues in care, review articles, student experiences, book/EBP resource reviews, and commentaries.11

Submission and review process: All submissions should be original work that has not been submitted to other journals. Authors must obtain written permission from all individuals and institutions mentioned in the acknowledgements. Documents should be in Microsoft Word format, double-spaced and in a 12-point font. Articles can be uploaded digitally through the journal’s online submissions portal; illustrations, figures, tables, and videos should be uploaded separately, not as part of the main document. Manuscripts should not have any identifying information on the main text; submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter describing the value of the manuscript for the body of scholarship and containing all the identifying information of the author. Authors should examine the specific requirements for submissions for each section of the journal.12

Conclusion: Evaluation of publication’s potential for LIS authors

This new publication has potential for LIS professionals in working in medical environments who have evidence-based practices to share with health professions faculty and other medical librarians. This publication seeks submissions about interprofessional teamwork, evidence-based practice, and culturally competent care, each of which the medical librarian is poised to build. According to Isaac Gilman, HIP‘s Managing Editor, “any work that improves interprofessional practice and education,”15 including pieces authored by LIS professionals, is welcomed by HIP.

 

Audience analysis


About the publication’s readers

Publication circulation: No numbers available, but the journal is open access.16

Audience location and language or cultural considerations: The journal is produced in the US at Pacific University,17 but the editorial board comes from universities across the country.18 Publication is in English,19 but can be seen online anywhere in the world. Authors should be sure to avoid jargon or idiom.

Reader characteristics: Readers have a high degree of interest in medical librarianship. Most will have an MLIS or other advanced degree. Most readers will be employed in medical libraries. Readers will be interested in anything related to providing medical information to a lay audience and new advances in medical librarianship. However, they may not have much interest in or knowledge of other types of librarianship.20

Knowledge of LIS subject matter: Readers will be well-versed in all aspects of medical librarianship.20

Conclusion: Analysis of reader characteristics and their potential impact on authors

Although it is a new publication, Health and Interprofessional Practice is a well-respected place for medical library authors, and may be a good place for new authors to get a start in publishing. With an open access policy, the journal will allow research to go out to a large number of readers.
