The editor and members of the editorial board will work with authors if necessary "to improve methodology, analysis, or presentation."[13. American Library Association. (2014). Only LIS authors with a serious interest in the issues, practices, and trends in technical services should consider submitting to this title. The editorial board has set up careful guidelines to maintain superior quality presentations and will assist authors when necessary to improve manuscripts. If an author is interested in writing about FRBR, RDA, metadata maintenance or similar topics, this is an excellent place to start.
Audience analysis

About the publication's readers
Publication circulation: 5,800. This number includes 4,600 ALA members, 860 other paying subscribers, and 340 complimentary subscriptions.[16. M. Weber, personal communication, 15 September 2008] Audience location: Most subscribers and ALA members are in the United States, with about 150 international subscribers.[17. M. Weber, personal communication, 15 September 2008] Since most subscribers are in the United States, English (with technical services jargon added) is the language used.[18. SerialsSolutions. (2014) Library Resources & Technical Services. Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory. Retrieved from http://ulrichsweb.serialssolutions.com.libaccess.sjlibrary.org/title/1404252876512/48844] Papers from non-U.S. authors are published if they meet LRTS criteria. Reader characteristics: LRTS readers work in different types of libraries. Sixty percent of them work in academic libraries; the other 40% are in public, school, and special libraries. In addition, approximately 75% of LRTS readers are also members of ALCTS. ALA members subscribing to LRTS share similar interests in cataloging information, collection development, archival materials, etc. They are looking for specific and detailed information with regards to their specialization and better management of their respective libraries. Each journal includes a section entitled "notes on operations" that serves the latter purpose. Most articles are technical in nature and serve to expand theories and scholarly thought. The journal also publishes thoughtful explorations of current topics in which the author or authors may express opinions that diverge from the norm.[19. M. Weber, personal communication, 15 September 2008] Knowledge of LIS subject matter: Most subscribers to this title are members of ALCTS. They will have general knowledge of LIS topics and will understand technical terms and practices related to cataloging and classification (FRBR, RDA), archival studies (digitization, OCR), etc. It is vital that prospective authors be familiar with specialized practices and responsibilities relevant to this publication.[20. M. Weber, personal communication, 15 September 2008]
Conclusion: Analysis of reader characteristics and their potential impact on authors
Readers of this publication are familiar with technical terms used in collection development preservation and technical services operations. They are seeking out innovative and scholarly information precise to their specialization. According to the LRTS website, independent research indicates that this title is the "most frequently cited journal in the field."[21. American Library Association. (2014). Guide for LRTS advertisers. Association for Library Collections & Technical Services. Retrieved from http://www.ala.org/alcts/resources/lrts/advertisers] Because of this, authors must be certain that they have something new or substantial to offer their readers that has not been previously reported or explored. Authors must also ensure that this is the appropriate venue for their work. This is a peer-reviewed journal that provides the scholarly opportunities needed by many academic librarians for professional advancement. Studies indicate that LRTS is ranked twelfth among the seventy LIS "refereed journals in supporting promotion and tenure decisions."[22. M. Weber, personal communication, 15 September 2008] To effectively reach this audience, articles must be well written and thoroughly researched. The editor of LRTS suggests browsing through recent issues "to get a sense of style, length, and tone."[23. M. Weber, personal communication, 15 September 2008] Last updated: October 31, 2014
