This is an excellent opportunity not only for librarians outside of North America, but also for librarians in the U.S. who have an interest in global issues in their own libraries. Recent issues have featured articles on "Internationalizing University of Kentucky Libraries"[18. American Library Association. (2015). American Library Association. (2015). ALA Round Table Membership Statistics 2004-Present. American Library Association. Retrieved from http://www.ala.org/membership/membershipstats_files/rndtblstats#irrt] All members of IRRT receive a copy of International Leads. However, the newsletter is open to anyone with access to the internet.[22. American Library Association. (2015). IRRT International Leads. American Library Association. Retrieved from http://www.ala.org/irrt/intlleads/leadsarchive/archive] Audience location and language or cultural considerations: As of 2006, membership in IRRT was almost evenly split with 52% of members from the U.S. and 48% international.[23. American Library Association. (2015). IRRT Membership Information. American Library Association. Retrieved from http://www.ala.org/irrt/sites/ala.org.irrt/files/content/irrtmembershipinfo/memprofile052906.pdf] Although IL is written in English, authors should be cognizant of an international audience, so should refrain from jargon or local colloquialisms. Reader characteristics: Since the majority of readers are not only members of the International Relations Round Table but also the ALA, most will work in public or academic libraries. As this publication "promotes global dialogue about librarianship"[24. American Library Association. (2015). IRRT Brochure. American Library Association. Retrieved from http://www.ala.org/irrt/sites/ala.org.irrt/files/content/IRRT-brochure.pdf], readers are a diverse group with a wide variety of interests, yet have a common belief in the importance of collaboration in the global sphere. Readers will not only have a keen interest in a wide variety of issues faced by international libraries, but also in ideas for creating connections with the international community in their own libraries. Reader knowledge of LIS subject matter: This is a informed and educated audience. Most readers will be knowledgeable about library issues. Since this is a global community of readers, the degrees of LIS expertise will be variable. [25. American Library Association. (2015). IRRT Membership Information. American Library Association. Retrieved from http://www.ala.org/irrt/sites/ala.org.irrt/files/content/irrtmembershipinfo/memprofile052906.pdf]
Conclusion: Analysis of reader characteristics and their potential impact on authors
This is a culturally savvy and highly engaged audience. Authors who write about their global librarianship experiences will find a readership who is involved in their professional community and is motivated to learn about different global initiatives. Last updated: April 14, 2015
